What does it mean to commission a work of art?

Commissioning art has historically been a way for people to display their wealth and power. Artists like Leonardo Da Vinci and Diego Velazquez gained popularity because of the high demand for them to paint commissioned works for members of the upper class. Not only was it popular to have portraits of oneself, but many also commissioned art that depicted religious scenes and historical events to showcase how cultured and educated the family was. The Medici family, once the richest family in Italy, commissioned works from the likes of Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Raphael, and Botticelli, eventually building up a large private collection.

Today, commissioned art from an artist whose work you love can be for anyone, not just the extremely wealthy! Here are some spectacular reasons to consider commissioning an artwork:

  • It is an opportunity to become a part of the creative process and make something special and personal for your space.

  • It’s a way to tell a visual story, a memory, about the people you love, or a beloved pet. Personalized artwork can be a family heirloom that is handed down through generations.

  • The collaboration between the artist and you results in a painting or ceramic sculpture that is made to fit in a particular space in your home with the preferred size, color palette, and subject matter that is meaningful, beautiful, and poignant.

  • I also do art commissions to give as unique and one-of-a-kind gifts!

This is a commissioned work titled, “Swan Song” that I did for a couple who wanted a large painting with animal figures that embodied their commitment and long life together. This piece hangs prominently in their home in a space where they can view it daily.

This is a commissioned work titled, “The Neighbors” that I did for a client who loved chickens so she could give it to someone as a personalized gift.

How The Process Works

  • Send me an inquiry at menagerie@lynnsisler.com. We will arrange a detailed conversation over the phone so that I can get a full understanding of what you would like. Knowing exactly what you want is not needed—come with a few ideas and approximate sizing. This is a creative collaboration! If after our conversation I do not think that my style or skill set will be appropriate for what you want or if you don’t want to proceed for any reason, no worries!

  • I write up a price quote and time frame for the work to be completed. Once an installment payment is received (50%), I begin work on the sketches based on our conversation. If more than 3 sketches are required (Up to 3 mock-up sketches are included in the price), each additional sketch is $50. The installment payment is non-refundable.

  • The artwork is shipped, delivered locally, or available for pick up. The full balance is due upon completion of the work. All commissioned work is non-refundable.

  • The artist, Lynn Sisler, retains all copyrights and reserves the right to reproduce the artwork in any manner in the future.

  • Prices range from $300-up.
